if you’re tired of dating apps, you are not alone

If you’re tired of dating apps, you are not alone. Even though dating apps have revolutionized the way we meet partners (in 2019 the majority of new couples in the US met online, and that’s even before the pandemic hit), they can be quite exhausting – and many therapists say that dating app fatigue is quite a common thing among their clients. But why do the apps that were so exciting to begin with turn less and less fun each year?

They are time-consuming

An average Badoo user spends 90 minutes a day on the app to find a date. In 2016 Hinge found out that it takes 500 matches to get one phone number.

People don’t behave like they would in real life

Since dating apps appeared on the radar, we learned the word “ghosting” too well. Ghosting is a form of behavior where one person abruptly or slowly ends the communication and stops answering. And it has become so common, no wonder people are tired of putting their best foot forward for people who suddenly disappear. The stats are shocking: 25% of people on dating apps have ghosted themselves, and 29% have been ghosted. A whopping 74% of respondents said that they thing ghosting is a normal way of ending communication. Well, ouch.

People don’t appear to be what they are

Cheating is a common thing dating apps are used for. A study in American students found out that 17% of people using dating apps were in a committed relationship at the time. And 7% of those people proceeded to cheating and getting physical while staying coupled with someone else. Seems disturbing? Well, because it is.

You might be someone's backup plan

The term “backburner relationship” appeared when people started having multiple relationships online – and a backburner is the type of relationship you keep barely alive just in case you want to come back to it if your current crush doesn’t work out. Needless to say, this lacks honesty and openness and can be exhausting.

But dating apps are still a useful tool to meet new people. How to use it and not get burned out? Stay tuned for the next post!
